From October 14 to 18, the “Great Shakeout” Earthquake Preparedness Special Event encourages participants to conduct earthquake drills on October 19. The special event call sign W7Q is available for amateur radio operators – especially on the US west coast – to promote discussions on earthquake preparedness at various levels.

W7Q – “Shakeout” Call
The special event call sign “W7Q” will be active from October 14 to 18, aligned with the Great Shakeout preparedness event on October 16. Licensed Ham Radio operators in Western Oregon – or anywhere else – can use this call sign to exchange earthquake awareness and preparedness reports. Participants should follow FCC guidelines and transmit only within their license privileges.

Folks, many things keep us away the radio. Next year, perhaps? With more preparation. From approximately Tuesday the 14th through this morning the 20th, there were a total of 149 look-ups on QRZ. Cool! I snuck in about 25 or so of those QSO’s during the operating period. So thanks for playing along!
